It is regrettable that equal distances are maintained in the UN Secretary General's reports, says Nicosia
It is regrettable that UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, maintains equal distances in his reports on his Good Offices Mission and the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), Government Spokesman Marios Pelicanos told the Cyprus News Agency.
Asked to comment on the content of the SG's reports, Mr. Pelecanos said that we see that equal distances are kept in the reports, possibly in an attempt by the SG to keep the window open so that the effort to resume the dialogue can continue.
He added that it is regrettable that equal distances are kept, since it would be more correct to record the facts as they are.
I do not think that the attempt at equalization discourages Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot side, on the contrary, it may give the right to the perception that the positions of the other side are tolerated by the SG, he said. He added that it is important to note that the Secretary General explicitly refers to the resolutions that define the framework for a Cyprus solution, but there is also a specific reference to the illegal actions in the enclosed area of Famagusta.
The reports stress that the UN position on the Famagusta enclave remains unchanged, while specific reference is made to resolutions 550 and 789 concerning the Famagusta enclave, and the importance of full compliance with the provisions of these two resolutions is underlined by the Secretary-General, the Spokesperson said.
He added that the Secretary-General expresses his strong concern about the actions of Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot community in the Famagusta enclave and calls for avoiding tensions both on land and at sea.
Finally, Pelecanos noted that the two reports will be discussed at the UN Security Council level on 17 January.
