Turkey's president tries to maintain Ankara's claims about allegedly demilitarized islands What he said on a flight from the Emirates to Turkey
He appeared provocative and again in his remarks by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who, speaking to reporters on board on his return from the United Arab Emirates, referred to the alleged demilitarization of Greek islands. "We will not remain silent about military activities on the Greek islands," Tayyip Erdogan said, hours after the Greek parliament voted in favour of the deal to buy 3+1 French Belh@rra frigates that will start joining the Greek fleet from 2025.
"It is not possible to remain silent about military activities carried out in violation of agreements on islands with a demilitarized status. Besides, we brought this issue to the UN. We will continue to keep it in the news in the coming period," Erdogan told Turkish journalists, adding: "in this regard, our minister warned them," referring to Cavusoglu's recent statements which were condemned by the United States, the EU and Britain."
"However," insisted Tayyip Erdogan, "f Greece continues this work, of course, we will make this warning at the highest level, whatever it takes." Because, as you know, the issue of islands is always controversial. We may be forced to bring into the news to raise these controversial issues. That is why my Minister warned them at a low level not to force us to open up these issues for discussion. And he was right to do so," Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.
It should be noted that the issue of the islands was raised by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu a few days ago. However, there was unanimous condemnation from the US State Department, the European Union and the British Foreign Office.
