"Some businesses impose additional charges on consumers who pay with cards"
The revised text of the proposed law, which will solve the problem of overcharging for products purchased with credit cards, was presented before the Commerce Committee of the House of Representatives on Tuesday.
This legislative proposal enables the Consumer Protection Agency to control and supervise the compliance of beneficiaries and to investigate complaints of infringements, impose administrative fines and issue court orders.
In a statement, AKEL MP Kostas Kostas said that in the two previous sessions of the committee they had highlighted the negative attitude of the Ministry of Finance and the Legal Service, to note that the representatives of the Ministry had indicated that there was essentially no problem and that the proposal was unconstitutional and incompatible with EU law.
Costa said that they had put a lot of pressure on the Ministry of Finance, the Central Bank and the Legal Service to cooperate, to note that "their insistence had been successful", as the revised text was put before the Commission today.
According to Costas, "unfortunately in this case, Parliament is running to close legislative loopholes", to add that "it is running to protect consumers and it is running to do what the government should have done before taking this decision".
He also said that some businesses are imposing surcharges on consumers who pay by card to buy products such as cigarettes, milk, newspapers, magazines, mobile phone cards, on the grounds that the small profit margin on these products is being eroded by the efforts of card payment service companies.
Finally, he said that "in some cases these increases compared to the price of the product are high."
