Cyprus received on Tuesday the new Novavax protein vaccine, called Nuvaxovid, Deputy Director of Pharmaceutical Services of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Elena Panagiotopoulou, told CNA, who noted that the first vaccinations will begin in the coming days.

According to Dr. Panagiotopoulou, a total of 15 thousand doses of Nuvaxovid vaccine were received in Cyprus.

As noted, tomorrow Wednesday the Ministry of Health will announce the start date of vaccination with Nuvaxovid, as well as when it will be available in vaccination centres.

As the Deputy Director of Pharmaceutical Services stressed, this preparation is only for the basic vaccination (first and second dose) and not the booster doses.

"It is all ready to be given to the vaccination centres. In the coming days, vaccinations will start," Dr. Panagiotopoulou told CNA.

What is the Nuvaxovid

Nuvaxovid[/B] is a vaccine for the prevention of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in people aged 18 years and older. It contains a version of a protein, found on the surface of the SARS-CoV-2 virus (spike protein), which has been produced in the laboratory.

This vaccine will be administered in doses, with an interval of 3 weeks, and according to the studies carried out, the effectiveness of the Nuvaxovid vaccine is about 90%.

According to Ms. Panagiotopoulou, the Nuvaxovid vaccine works by preparing the body to defend itself against COVID-19 infection, and noted that it also contains an immune booster, a substance that helps to enhance immune responses to the vaccine.

"When a person receives the vaccine, their immune system will recognise the protein in the vaccine as foreign and produce natural defences - antibodies and T cells - against it," he said.

How it works

It is noted that if the vaccinated person comes into contact with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the immune system will recognise the spike protein in the virus and be ready to attack.

Antibodies and immune cells can protect against COVID-19 disease by working together to kill the virus, prevent it from entering the body's cells and destroy infected cells.
