Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that humanitarian corridors are in place to allow the residents of Mariupol and Volnovaka to leave

Volodymyr Zelensky in a new message to the Ukrainian people confirmed the existence of humanitarian corridors for civilians, while once again asking the West to get more actively involved in Ukraine's war by imposing a no-fly zone over the country. He also appeared optimistic that refugees would soon be able to return to the country.

In his address, Zelensky said: "We have managed to reach an agreement to provide aid to Ukraine's cities in dire straits, Mariupol and Volnovaka, to rescue children, women and the elderly. To provide medicine and food to those who are staying there in those places."

"Those people who wish to leave those places should be able to do so now using the humanitarian corridor, but those who can continue to fight should stay.

We are doing everything we can on our side to make sure that this agreement works, in terms of humanitarian corridors, and we will see if we can go even further on our negotiations with Russia."

What more is needed, asks Biden

Zelenski used his speech to address the US directly, asking "what more is needed" to convince Joe Biden to implement a no-fly zone. He argued that 74% of Americans agree that this is necessary.

He also welcomed the efforts of Poland, which has taken in more than 600,000 refugees since Russian troops invaded Ukraine on 24 February, and expressed confidence that the refugees would soon be able to return home: "I am sure that soon we will be able to say to our people: come back! Come back from Poland, Romania, Slovakia and all the other countries. Turn back because there is no more threat."
