Communication of the Movement of Ecologists "We express our concerns about the plans to upgrade the coastline in Chloraka"

The statement of the Movement of Ecologists:

"The plans to upgrade the shoreline in Chloraka are of great concern to us, as they are plans that at first glance do not seem to ensure public safety and pose many risks, as well as environmental costs.

The Paphos District Secretary Mr. Nicholas Arkadiou in a statement said that: "Following the statement of Dr. Xenia Loizidou, a coastal engineer with many years of experience in coastal protection and marine construction, our fears about the planned coastal projects are confirmed. In particular, the destruction of the rocky terrain, combined with the high intensity waves create bottom currents that will endanger bathers. Moreover, these currents will remove every winter the sand placed by the local authorities to make a beach, and there will be annual sand removal procedures that will affect the biodiversity of the area.

At the same time we express our strong dissatisfaction with the construction of multiple breakwaters and plans for a new Paphos Marina in Kissonerga. We recall that the Paphos planning authority has already been warned about the serious risk of erosion of specific areas where they want to locate the marina, by a relevant study of the Geological Survey Department.

We immediately call on the competent authorities to review the risks and environmental impact of the planned projects in Chloraka and Kissonerga. The primary concern must always be to ensure the public safety of the residents of the area and beyond."
