Mourning for the student who was killed in an elevator in Serres He had just moved in alone He was helping the needy and stray animals Firefighter's testimony shocks

Grief prevails in Serres after the horrible death of the 26-year-old student in an elevator, while trying to take down a refrigerator from the floor where he was staying in order to move it to a nearby house he was moving into.

The elevator in which the 26-year-old attempted to take the fridge down did not have an interior protective door, causing the fridge to get stuck in the shaft, causing turbulence and hitting the unfortunate student in the carotid artery.

He would be taking a new step in his life

According to GRTimes.gr, 26-year-old Panagiotis was preparing to take a new "step" in his life - moving to a detached house - in the town of Serres in order to "straighten out" his life.

"He had been looking for almost two years to find a suitable house to move to and the fridge was one of the last things he had to move. The thing is that it wasn't big, meaning he could either take it with the child who went to help him and they could easily get it down the stairs or he could put it in the elevator alone without him being inside," stresses a person who knew him.

Panagiotis was from Chrysoupoli in Kavala, he was studying in Serres, while in recent years he had been working as a distributor. Everyone spoke highly of his character and his professionalism at work. He also did social work in the town of Serres, where he helped the needy almost daily and housed stray animals in his house until he could find them a safer place to stay.

"They heard a deafening sound.. and that's where it all stopped."

Initially, the 26-year-old had asked for help with the move, but because most of his acquaintances were working during those hours, he eventually cancelled it for that night and rescheduled it for the next morning.

"We told him to do it tomorrow, so we'd have time, because there was only a few things left to move. So we agreed that we would do it the next day. However, at 11:30 p.m. one of the guys he was with at work was schooling and went to help him in the end, and his girlfriend was at the scene. Presumably he was behind the cart with the fridge upstairs, so as soon as he pushed the button to get down, the front of the fridge hit the part where there was no safety door and it was basically thrown on top of him. There was a deafening sound from the pressure and that's when they realized something had happened. The elevator was stuck, causing them to directly call the fire department to immediately open the door. However, it had jammed and it "took" them about 30 minutes to get it unblocked. When they opened it everything was a mass... Panagiotis was already unconscious. I had basically surrounded him all around and the mirror had been shattered by the pressure," the anonymous source adds to GRTimes.gr.

Then the man who was with him for the move also assisted in his extrication at midnight on Saturday, while his girlfriend was in shock.

His brother and his father were immediately informed about the incident, who went to the General Hospital of Serres, with the father reportedly in a bad psychological state, while the mother of the unfortunate child will soon arrive at the hospital.

Finally, the funeral is expected to be held in Chrysoupoli, but first the body of the young man will be transferred to the Forensic Service of Thessaloniki, in order to be examined and the final conclusion as to the causes of his death.

Firefighter's testimony shocks

The firefighter who freed the unfortunate young man from the elevator speaking to ERT said: "Unfortunately when we arrived at the scene we found the lift between the 1st and 2nd floor and inside there was a person who was carrying a household appliance which for some reason apparently moved inside the shaft and came and cornered the man inside and caused him fatal injury."

The messages for the 26-year-old are heartbreaking: Shocked friends and relatives

Friends and relatives of young Panagiotis are devastated. They can not believe that the 26-year-old found a horrible death in the elevator of his house.

With a flower and a candle next to the trolley, with which the unfortunate 26-year-old tried to carry the refrigerator and which is located at the entrance of the apartment building and with messages on social media say goodbye to their colleague who so unjustly passed away the employees of the delivery company in Serres.

"Yesterday evening, one of our own children in Serres, Panagiotis, died tragically. All of us at Delivery Services are shocked at his loss; his characteristic smile is gone forever. But it will never be erased from our hearts and minds. Best wishes to his family. Happy Heaven to our Panagiotis," his colleagues wrote while his friend who was helping him with the transfer was in a state of shock.

This morning he came to the entrance of the apartment building and left a note in which he wrote: "What a nasty game fate has played on you man. Why, why did you leave like that. I came to help you and you gave me your hand for the last time. As if you knew. Good journey."

His colleague Antonis told ERT Serres: "He had asked us to help him move. A colleague went. The boy was inside the elevator and the fridge hit him in the carotid artery. Our colleague couldn't do anything because the lift door was closed until the firemen arrived. We don't know what happened. What can you say. Bad timing. I'm upset with myself because he told us to help him and only one of us went. He was a really nice guy. I can't believe it.
