Ukraine had warned of the risk of radioactive leakage

Russia's Defence Ministry has accused the Ukrainian military of hitting power lines and a substation supplying electricity to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, calling it a "dangerous provocation", Reuters reported, citing Interfax.

Earlier today, Wednesday, Ukraine warned of the risk of a radiation leak after the station's power supply was cut off during hostilities between Russian and Ukrainian forces.

Work to restore power to the nuclear power plant, which has been occupied by Russian military forces, is not possible due to the hostilities.

The Chernobyl plant is located in an exclusion zone and includes inactive nuclear reactors and radioactive waste facilities.

The power cut at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant "has no significant safety implications", however, said the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which was informed by the Ukrainian authorities of the problem of the power cut at the Ukrainian nuclear power plant.

Given the time that has passed since the 1986 Chernobyl accident, "the thermal load of the spent nuclear fuel disposal pool and the volume of cooling water are sufficient to ensure the release of heat without electricity," the IAEA explained on Twitter.
