The Council of Cultural Bodies of Limassol has expressed its opposition to thoughts of relocating the archaeological museum of Limassol, outside the city limits, the Council of Limassol Cultural Bodies expresses in an open letter, in which it puts forward a series of proposals for upgrading the existing site.
In its letter, the Council states that it has been informed with great surprise that there is a thought of moving the archaeological museum to another site, noting that the existing site is convenient and ideal for everyone.
"We recognise that the museum needs modernisation and improvements but these could be made without moving it," it continues, suggesting that "this is, after all, the trend internationally, to improve existing museum buildings in terms of their exhibition space."
In relation to the issue of its size, the Limassol Coordinating Council of Cultural Bodies proposes the addition of floors "where there will be a viewing room and a space for temporary exhibitions, a shop for selling souvenirs, a cafeteria, sanitary facilities, etc.". As regards the lack of storage space, it suggests that the problem should be solved with underground spaces or the construction of warehouses in another area.
He expresses the position that the study should be a collaboration between scientific museum staff and architects, engineers and urban planners and that "we need vision, imagination and willingness so that the Museum can be properly promoted and highlighted as is the case with museums abroad and its functional integration into the urban fabric, access by public transport, connection to pedestrian and cycle paths from the coastal road, etc.".
"It is necessary to cultivate museological awareness in students where, with appropriate guided tours and educational programs, they will consolidate the need to learn our history," he adds.
Finally, he suggests that "there is so much that can be done in upgrading a museum so that it can be modernized and showcased appropriately, thoughtfully and properly" and that "relocating it should not have been the first consideration, and without adequate documentation, an interdisciplinary approach and study."
It is noted that for the new Limassol archaeological museum, a proposal has been submitted by the Municipality of Germasogeia and the communities of the surrounding area, as this is done in the Amathus area, where the majority of the exhibits of the existing museum come from.
