Statement by Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth Prodromos Prodromos on the death of the writer and scholar Lefkios Zafeiriou
The news of the death of Lefkios Zafeiriou was deeply saddening, Minister of Education Prodromos Prodromos Prodromou said in a statement, saying that we have lost a talented and gifted writer and scholar, who was a long-time member of the Ministry of Education, with a special contribution to the Greek letters of Cyprus.
Lefkios Zafeiriou, he adds, distinguished himself and contributed much not only as a poet and prose writer, but also as a scholar of literature and even as an education executive. He was one of the people who leaves a legacy in the cultivation of the crucial relationship between education and letters and literature.
"A fighter of life, but also a fighter of the spirit, he leaves the imprint of a noble, well-meaning, but also a stubborn worker of letters and the spirit."
"A fighter of life, but also a fighter of the spirit, he leaves the imprint of a noble, well-meaning, but also a stubborn worker of letters and the spirit. He faced great difficulties with courage and patience, emerging victorious in life, but we had the misfortune that he finally passed away, relatively prematurely, yesterday."
Lefkios leaves us an important literary oeuvre, with a distinctive poetic statement and prose, which have earned him important distinctions and awards, the Minister noted. "He has also produced important anthologies and literary studies. He was particularly distinguished for his original research work on Andreas Kalvos. While of particular importance is that he has always acted as an active liaison between the wider Greek and Cypriot Greek literature. His close collaboration with important contemporary personalities of Greek letters leaves a lasting imprint on the world of literature."
From his early youth, with "Almost Nihilism", to "Symphorites" and "The Life and Work of Andreas Kalvos (1792-1869)", he leaves us a very remarkable work that will always speak for its creator."

"I personally had the opportunity to know and work closely with Lefkios Zafiriou and I will always remember him as a noble thinker and an eager dialogue lover of letters. We worked together in particular for some time when Nikos Orphanidis and Lefkios Zafeiriou and I started publishing the literary review "The Coast" at a crucial moment in the early 1990s and that experience leaves me with the fond memory of Lefkios as a great thinker as well as a human being. The moments, the interaction and discussions with Lefkio in the context of an intellectual circle that for years revolved around the "Aegeon" in Nicosia also remain unforgettable."
Both personally and on behalf of the Ministry and the educational world, which he served from various important positions, the Minister of Education says, I can say with certainty that Lefkio's memory will be eternal and dear.
In conclusion, he extends his sincere condolences to his two brothers and the rest of his family.
