Reopening of High Schools - Lyceums Detailed data on the absences of students, teachers and substitutions today What OELMEK reports

The number of absences of both teachers and students on the first day of the reopening of High Schools and Lyceums across the country was significant.

Based on the data collected today by OELMEK from almost all secondary schools in Cyprus, during the first day of the reopening of secondary schools after the Christmas holidays,

Detailed data:

7.18% of Teachers were absent as cases/contacts or for the care of minor children under 15 years of age who are cases/contacts.

18.40% of Students were absent.

Only 29.13% of absent Teachers were replaced[/B] by other colleagues.

"The above data confirm the concerns we expressed in our statement on 7 January 2022, that school managements and teaching staff will face significant problems and difficulties due to the dramatic increase in the number of cases in the last period," OELMEK said in a statement.

At the same time, it notes that, despite the difficulties, the managements and the teaching staff of the schools have responded, as they have been doing throughout this period of the pandemic, with absolute competence to the difficult circumstances, making enormous efforts so that the educational process takes place in the physical presence of students and teachers in safety and health.

"What has not responded as much as it should to the need to support schools to enable them to operate safely is the Ministry of Education and Science, which did not take care of the timely replacement of absent teachers, since not even a third of the vacancies were filled, a situation that cannot continue," he notes.

Finally, the organisation stresses once again their demand for "practical support from those in charge to school managements and teaching staff, so that they can carry out their work in the best possible conditions under the circumstances".

"We stress that we will continue to monitor the situation and the operation of the schools, intervening in any way necessary in the developments," it concludes."
