Mental health problems are among the most important issues that millions of people in the world face every day. According to figures, more than 450 million people worldwide currently suffer from mental disorders, most of which begin in adolescence.

The problem has been exacerbated in recent years by the pandemic COVID-19, which has left a strong mark on the daily lives of all citizens, forcing them to experience confinement and social isolation.

In order to raise public awareness and strengthen efforts to support sufferers and their families, the World Federation of Mental Health, with the support of the World Health Organization, have designated 10 October as World Mental Health Day.[/B] This year's campaign slogan is "Making mental health and well-being a global priority for all."

The World Mental Health Organization, through the Directorate of Mental Health, is continuously developing actions and processes to improve the quality of mental health services. Currently, the first phase of the construction of the new Mental Health Hospital in Nicosia is underway, which is expected to be completed in February 2024, while planning for the second phase of the project has already begun.

The building reconfiguration of a structure in the community that will serve as a sheltered hostel for the accommodation of chronic patients, who currently remain at the Athalassa Hospital, will soon be completed. With the operation of the hostel, the hospital will be decongested, which will have more beds available until the completion of the reconstruction project of the new Mental Health Centre.

In the immediate plans of the OCYPY is the announcement of a public tender for the reconfiguration of available space within the Psychiatric Clinic at the New Limassol Hospital for the creation of an Inpatient Department for persons with serious mental health problems.
