Security measures against car theft Recommendations from the Police

Incidents of car theft occur regularly, often due to unsafe storage of the vehicle and/or its keys.

To prevent such incidents of theft and in addition to the efforts made by the Police to prevent them, the public is urged to be particularly vigilant and to take further measures to protect their property more effectively.

Responsible drivers of vehicles should take seriously that thieves are lurking and therefore, we should even if we are away from our vehicle for a few minutes, take all those measures that would prevent its theft.

As an indication, the following is a series of precautionary measures that citizens are advised to take.

  1. Do not leave your car running and never leave the keys in the ignition or in the car. Even if we are going to be away for even a very short time for a visit to a store, office or other place, we lock our car and keep the keys in our possession.
  2. We always lock the doors and fully roll up the windows, even if our car is parked in front of our house or in another place we consider safe.
  3. We do not leave our car keys exposed in prominent places or where any third party may have access to our home, workplace or any other place we visit.
  4. We ensure that our car keys are kept safe, especially when we are in busy places such as shops, restaurants, etc, where there is an increased possibility of theft.
  5. We always park our car in places where there is plenty of street lighting and preferably in supervised car parks. Dark or secluded places make the thieves' task easier.
  6. Finally, it is recommended to install an anti-theft alarm system in your car.

In general, the public is urged to be vigilant and cooperate closely with the police and in case they spot anything suspicious, such as persons or vehicles driving suspiciously, or know anything about such theft incidents, immediately inform the local Police Station or contact the Citizen's Line on telephone number 1460, as this may help to identify the suspected persons, solve incidents of theft and prevent such incidents in the future.
