Simos Ioannou recommends increased attention to Turkey's "trap" for an enclosed Famagusta

The Mayor of Famagusta Simos Ioannou urged his fellow citizens to be very careful in relation to the "real estate committee", to avoid the "trap set by Turkey to expropriate their properties and rights through legal procedures".

Asked by the Cyprus News Agency to comment on reports in the T/C press that the "real estate committee" had admitted the "bakuqaf department" (EBKAF) as interested parties in the properties concerning the fenced area of Famagusta, the "Religious Affairs Department" and the "Abdullah Pasias Bakufiko", Mr. Ioannou said that the Famagusta issue will not be resolved by legal means, but only by political means.

The legitimate residents of Famagusta, he continued, have at their disposal the strong cards of UN Security Council resolutions, the support of the five permanent members of the UNSC, the EU and the world in general, which makes political maneuvers on Turkey's side very difficult. That is why it is trying legalistic ways to achieve it, he added.

Even the latest resolution to renew the mandate of UNFICYP mentions who owns the town and reiterates the position to return the enclosed area of Famagusta to its inhabitants, he said.

"It is a Trojan horse, a trap that started with the opening of 3% of the enclosed Famagusta and the invitation to the residents to return through the 'real estate committee' and seems to involve the 'wakufi department' (EBKAF), the religious affairs department and the wakufi of Abdullah Pasias," he continued. In response to a question, he explained that these religious institutions claim that some properties belonging

to the E/Cs are theirs.

The reason why these actions were taken, the Famagusta mayor believes, is so that these institutions could claim compensation from ethnic Greeks who built the houses or other buildings, before accepting that these properties belonged entirely to their ethnic Greek owners.

He finally reiterated his appeal to Famagusta residents to avoid appealing to the "real estate committee", while advising those who insist on doing so to avoid any discussion around the claims of these institutions because, he said, they would have unforeseen consequences.
