The head of the Office of Religious Affairs Ahmet Unsal, accompanied by a delegation and the Turkish Cypriot co-chairman of the bi-communal Technical Committee for Cultural Heritage Ali Tuncai, visited the Maronite village of Kormakitis in the occupied territories.
According to the Press and Information Office, a statement from the office, published by the T/C newspaper Detay, said that during its visit to St. George's Cathedral, the delegation met with priest Andreas Katsionoudis, who briefed Dr. Unsal on the situation of the villagers and exchanged views.
In response to a question from Dr. Unsal, the Maronites of the village said that they have no problems in carrying out their religious duties, but asked for support for the restoration of the Holy Monastery of Prophet Elijah, which is of great value to them from a historical and religious point of view.
Maintaining that the Ottoman state had always ensured the necessary facilities for its non-Muslim population in matters of prayer to live peacefully, Mr. Unsal said that throughout history facilities were also ensured by the Ottoman state for the Maronite community. He then added that as heirs of the Ottoman [EMPIRE] they are ready to help find a solution to the difficulties faced by Maronites in carrying out their religious duties.
