The Prefect of Paphos added that the main objectives of the Paphos District Administration include improving the quality of life of rural residents, curbing urbanization and creating conditions for new jobs. In this context, he continued, projects are being implemented with the support of the Ministry of Interior, concerning the regeneration of traditional community cores with stone paving and landscaping of roads , improvements to residential facades , the creation of regional exhibition centres with a specific theme to attract special forms of tourism, the creation of areas for youth and adult activities and the creation of parks and excursion areas.
He also pointed out that most major projects are ongoing and cover two annual budgets, which is why there are projects underway since 2021 that are expected to be completed in 2022.
He added that the development expenditure of the Paphos District Administration through the State Budget, with the corresponding contribution of the Community Councils, but also from the gradual absorption of funds from European Funds (the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Leader Programme) for co-funded projects, is in the total range of 15 million euros, on average per year. She also said that an amount of around 5.5 million per year is available for the improvement and widening of roads under their responsibility, including rural roads.
As Mrs Lambrou said, the amount in question includes the phased construction of flood protection works and the construction of retaining walls. In the last four years, she continued, "we have built three modern bridges, namely Natas - Choletrias, Natas - Episkopi, and Kelokedara - Zyripilli at a cost of around 400,000 euros each, to connect riverside communities and for faster and safer movement of residents and farmers of the Xeros and Ezousa rivers, especially during the winter period when flooding occurs."
Lambrou noted that through the next two budgets (2022- 2023) two more bridges will be built, Archimandrite - Mammonia and Salamiou - Xeros River.
Allocation of land plots to needy families
Regarding the housing projects for the revitalization of mountainous and disadvantaged areas, as well as specific rural areas, which are being handled in consultation with the Ministry of Interior, Lambrou stressed that they offer financial incentives and support to beneficiaries for the acquisition of housing in the countryside. These are, she said, incentives that are subject to continuous evaluation for possible improvements to curb urbanization.
In addition, he noted that with the mentioned financial incentives for housing, the Office of the Provincial Administration has proceeded in the last 2- 3 years with the allocation of plots of land for allocation to families with limited incomes in Kouklia and Emba, while the allocation of plots of land in Stato - Agios Fotios and Drymou is being evaluated.
