The reform of local government is a legacy to new generations, says the Presidency
The implementation of the Local Government reform will be a legacy to future generations, the Presidency of the Republic said in a statement in which the Government welcomes the passage into law by the Plenary of the House of Representatives of the three bills relating to the reform of Local Government, an imperative necessity for the country, it added.
Stressing that the implementation of the local government reform was one of the prerequisites for the disbursement of resources from the Recovery and Resilience Fund for the implementation of the national plan "Cyprus - Tomorrow", the Presidency noted that the other reforms pending in the House of Representatives, which will contribute to the modernisation of the state, should be dealt with in the same consensual spirit.
The passage of the bills submitted by the Government into law paved the way, the Presidency added, noting that the spirit of cooperation that prevailed allowed decisive steps to be taken after ten years to complete this marathon effort.
This is a development that will result in significant savings of financial and other resources and, above all, will provide better services to citizens, as the new municipalities acquire administrative and financial autonomy, flexibility and increased responsibilities, it is further stated, stressing that local government in our country is becoming a modern system of local governance.
