In a live TV address around 5.00 Cyprus time, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of a military operation in Donbass calling on Ukrainian soldiers in the line of contact to lay down their arms.
A few minutes later, explosions were heard both in Donetsk and near the Ukrainian capital, according to CNN Greece. A powerful explosion was also heard in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second largest city in the northwest. CNNi reporters in the field also reported that explosions were heard near the capital, Kiev.
This was preceded by a formal request from the separatist leadership in Donetsk and Luhansk to Russia for military assistance against "Ukrainian aggression" - precisely the pretext for taking action.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres addressed Russian President Vladimir Putin directly[/B] during an emergency meeting of the Security Council in New York, making a dramatic appeal to him not to order "[RUSSIA'S] troops to attack Ukraine."
