Seven members of the Islamic State were killed in an airstrike in Iraq
Seven members of the jihadist group Islamic State (IS) were killed today in an airstrike in Nineveh, northern Iraq, the Iraqi armed forces said.
Utilizing intelligence gathered, Iraqi forces launched an attack this morning on a 140-meter-long cave in which I.K. fighters had set up their headquarters. in the Hatra desert, south of Nineveh, a spokesman for Iraqi armed forces chief Yahya Rasool said.
"According to initial reports, there were seven terrorists inside (the cave) and all of them are dead," he said. In recent months, Iraqi security forces have launched deadly attacks against Islamic State jihadists in recent months to thwart their activities.
In late 2017, Iraqi forces regained control of territory held by Islamic State. However, IS jihadists took refuge in urban centres, deserts and inaccessible areas, often carrying out attacks against security forces and civilians.
