Justice Minister to Brussels for EU Justice and Home Affairs Council She will hold a meeting with her Irish counterpart to discuss issues of common interest
Minister of Justice and Public Order Stefi Drakou[/B] is travelling to Brussels, to Brussels, where she will attend the Justice and Home Affairs Council of the European Union on 3 and 4 March, which takes place in the shadow of military and political developments in Ukraine.
In addition, as announced by the Ministry of Justice, the Minister of Justice will hold a meeting with her Irish counterpart to discuss issues of common interest.
In the context of the Council's work, Ministers are expected to follow up on the discussions held during last month's Informal Council on the political governance of the Schengen area and will exchange views on the Presidency's proposal to establish a special Schengen Council configuration, in which issues relating to challenges and emerging problems can be discussed directly.
According to the Ministry of Justice, the proposal to introduce the institution of a European Coordinator for Schengen issues and the creation of a solidarity platform to ensure an appropriate European response to crises at the external borders will also be discussed.
Furthermore, the Ministers of the Member States will discuss issues relating to the preservation and promotion of the rule of law, with an emphasis on the means required to protect the legal profession.
In this context, they will exchange views on the scope for establishing a common set of rules for the legal profession as an essential element in ensuring the proper functioning of justice in the European Union.
The meeting is also expected to discuss, inter alia, the draft conclusions on combating racism and anti-Semitism and cooperation with Latin American countries in the fight against drug trafficking.
Finally, Ministers will discuss the implications of developments in Ukraine in the field of justice in relation to wider cooperation with Russia.
