UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson had a telephone conversation with the President of Ukraine in the early hours of the morning, with the main topic of discussion being the Russian strike on the nuclear power plant near Zaporizhzhya.

According to Downing Street, Britain assesses the development as "seriously worrying" and the two leaders agreed that Russia must immediately halt the attack at the site and allow unhindered access for emergency services.

Boris Johnson said President Putin's reckless actions could now directly threaten the security of all of Europe.

He added that the UK would do all it could to ensure that the situation did not deteriorate further.

The British Prime Minister also informed the Ukrainian President that he will call for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in the coming hours and that the UK will raise the issue directly with Russia and close partners.

The leaders also agreed that it is critical to agree a ceasefire in Ukraine.
