Crisis in Ukraine First tranche of sanctions from Britain to Russia
A package of sanctions against Russia was announced by Boris Johnson on the floor of the British parliament.
The British Prime Minister said that sanctions would be imposed on five Russian banks the Rossiya, IS Bank, General Bank, Promsvyazbank and Black Sea Bank and three wealthy Russian citizens of Vladimir Putin's entourage Gennady Timchenko, Boris Rottenberg and Igor Rottenberg who will be banned from entering Britain and any assets they have in the country will be frozen.
This is the first tranche of sanctions, Johnson said, warning that more will follow if Vladimir Putin continues down the same path. "The UK's determination to defend our NATO allies is absolute and unwavering," the prime minister warned: "We cannot say what will happen in the coming days, but we must prepare for a protracted crisis which the UK will face up to alongside our allies."
Johnson stressed that precisely because the stakes are so high, Putin's project in Ukraine must fail and must be seen to fail. He also said that this will require the persistence, unity and determination of the entire Western alliance. "Our thoughts must turn to our brave Ukrainian friends who threaten no one, who ask for nothing but to live in peace and freedom."
Earlier, Johnson's spokesman backed Germany's move to freeze certification of the controversial Nord Stream 2 pipeline. "Europe needs to wean itself off Russian hydrocarbons," he told reporters."
More than 360 Russians
Sanctions against Russia are being prepared in parallel by the EU and the US. Proposals submitted by the Commission and the European External Action Service ( European External Action Service ) to EU member states following Putin's moves call for sanctions on 27 individuals and entities in Russia, including politicians, propagandists, military personnel and economic entities that the EU considers to be linked to "illegal activities" in the breakaway regions of eastern Ukraine.
The EU is still considering imposing sanctions on 351 members of the Russian Duma who voted in favour of recognising the independence of the breakaway regions of eastern Ukraine, while 11 other Russians who recommended the move are also being crossed. At the same time, the ambassadors of the EU member states supported the targeting of the commanders of the forces sent by Putin to the two regions. All countries supported the sanctions, while Hungary had reservations. The sanctions package has not yet been finalised and will need the formal approval of EU member states.
