Syrian air defenses have intercepted a barrage of Israeli missiles targeting the Damascus area, according to a Syrian military source quoted by state media.
According to this source, property damage has been recorded.[/B] A spokesman for the Israeli armed forces was not available for comment.
Since the war in Syria broke out in 2011, Israel has launched hundreds of strikes, almost all from the air, against positions of the Syrian government's armed forces and their allies, Iranian and pro-Iranian armed organizations, notably the Lebanese Shiite armed faction Hezbollah. Israeli authorities regularly signal that they will not allow Iran, a sworn enemy of the Jewish state, to set up a beachhead on Syrian territory.
The war in Syria has claimed the lives of over half a million people, caused massive damage to infrastructure, and uprooted millions of civilians who have become internally displaced persons and refugees.
