Israel postpones the start of vaccinations for the fourth dose of the coronavirus vaccine

Israel postpones the start of vaccinations for the fourth dose of the coronavirus vaccine[/B].[/B] The country was the first in the world to schedule fourth-dose vaccinations under the threat of the Omicron variant as well.

More specifically, the vaccinations were due to start on Sunday, December 26, but will be delayed indefinitely. The Israeli government has decided to put the brakes on vaccinations after a new assessment that the Omicron variant causes milder disease than other variants, although it spreads faster and is better at avoiding vaccines.

In a TV report on Israel's Channel 13, the director of Israel's health ministry said he may not approve the additional booster doses pending further data showing that hospitalization from the new Omicron variant is less likely than originally estimated.

Specifically, Nuckman Ash, the ministry's director general, said he has not yet approved the fourth dose vaccination campaign as data is also awaited from Britain that proves the Omicron variant of coronavirus causes less severe illness than the Delta strain.

Up to 70% chance

Preliminary evidence suggests that people infected with Omicron are between 50 and 70% less likely to need hospitalisation than those infected with the Delta strain, Britain's public health service said on Thursday.

"We will discuss it again"

"If more data comes out with the same result we will have to send the issue of the fourth dose for more discussion to the expert committees," Ash told Channel 13, confirming that the fourth dose of vaccination will be delayed in Israel.
