The deal, worth £18 million, was signed in December 2020. Indeed, news of the sum sparked outrage from artists working with the platform, who saw their own wages as particularly meagre compared to those earned by the royals.
Meghan and Harry had been contracted through production company Archewell Audio to produce and present a series of podcasts around the world. A year later, and while the Sussexes have been in the public eye many times, they have released an episode just 35 minutes long...
Ian Penman, a lawyer specialising in music streaming contracts, told the Express that Spotify probably paid the Duke and Duchess of Sussex an upfront payment and retained the right to back out of the £18 million total if it was unpopular.
"It would not be unfair to suggest that perhaps their popularity was not as great as they or Spotify originally felt" he said.
"It's commonplace in music deals, this goes back decades, that when people talk about a big deal, like Robbie Williams signing a deal for £15 million or something, it doesn't mean he gets £15 million on day one," he added.
