One year after the Capitol invasion Biden's fierce attack on Trump "Continued threat to democracy"

US President Joe Biden[/B] today accused his predecessor Donald Trump of being a continuing threat to American democracy and "attempting to prevent a peaceful transition of power" on January 6, 2021 with the attack on Capitol Hill, an "armed insurrection," according to the Democrat.

"For the first time in history, a president not only did not lose an election, he also attempted to prevent a peaceful transition of power" and his supporters who attacked the Capitol, where the U.S. Congress is based, "were not a group of tourists, they were an armed insurrection," Biden said in a speech to Congress.

Donald Trump "created and spread a web of lies" denouncing fraud, because of which he lost the 2020 presidential election, the US president also said.

"The former US president created and spread a web of lies about the 2020 election," he did so "because he prefers power over principle," the US head of state noted, stressing that the Republican had been "building his lie for months" before the election.

In addition, Joe Biden promised at the end of his speech on the first anniversary of the attack on the Capitol:

"I will not allow anyone to put a gun to the (American) democracy's head."

Both in the US and abroad "we are committed to a battle between democracy and authoritarianism," the US president said.

"I did not seek that battle," but "I will not go away," he said.

For her part, Vice President Kamala Harris today called on Americans to "come together" to "defend" democracy, one year after the attack on Capitol Hill.

"The American spirit has been tested," she asserted during a ceremony in Congress on the first anniversary of those dramatic events.

"We must come together to defend our democracy."

"We must come together to defend our democracy.

Trump sees division in the country

Former US President Donald Trump today accused Joe Biden of invoking his name to further divide the country on the first anniversary of his supporters' deadly attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Biden "used my name today in an attempt to further divide America," Trump said in a written statement following Biden's speech at the Capitol on the anniversary.

"This political theater is simply a distraction" aimed at making people forget the "failures" of the Democratic president, Trump said.

Earlier today, U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell accused Democrats of "politically exploiting" the anniversary of the Capitol attack.

"It was incredible to see some Democrats in Washington attempting to exploit this anniversary to advance partisan goals that existed long before this event," he said in a press release, calling January 6, 2021 "a dark day for Congress and our country."
