Carriers have shown interest in the maritime passenger connection between Cyprus and Greece

In the coming months the maritime passenger connection between Cyprus and Greece is expected to take shape,[/B] after a number of carriers showed interest in the new tender document issued by the Deputy Ministry of Shipping.

At noon the deadline for submission of bids of the open tender, announced on November 25, 2021, expired[/B] and more than one candidate carrier showed interest, Deputy Minister of Shipping Vassilis Dimitriades told Cypriot News Agency.

Expressing satisfaction for the event, Demetriades said that "we are not celebrating, but we consider it as an important step before the last one, which is the evaluation and award of the offer".

"The great and painstaking effort we made as a team of the Ministry of State has paid off, as we managed to attract the interest of economic operators in a tender whose peculiarities made the project very difficult," he added.

He attributed the attraction of interest from carriers to the renegotiation of the terms with the European Commission and the redrafting of the tender document.

Early next week, he stressed, the tenders submitted will be put before the Evaluation Committee, appointed in accordance with the provisions of the relevant legislation, for evaluation, with a view to awarding the tender as soon as possible.

The award is expected to be made at the end of February, beginning of March and according to the Deputy Minister of Shipping, the maritime transport of passengers will start either in April or May.

It is noted that it is up to the selected carrier whether it will use the port of Limassol or Larnaca.
