Around 10 o'clock last night while members of the police were carrying out traffic controls on Independence Street in Strovolos, they signaled a car driver to stop, since he was speeding.
The driver failed to stop and picked up speed in order to evade the checkpoint. Immediately, two police patrol cars followed this vehicle which was travelling at high speed, entered the Nicosia - Limassol motorway from a one-way street and then moved towards the Kalamon roundabout where it entered a dead end. In an attempt to escape, the driver of the vehicle, struck the two police cars causing extensive damage to them.
The three occupants of the vehicle, got out of it and tried to run away but were intercepted by members of the police. They were three persons aged 26, 24 and 22.
The above were taken to the Nicosia Traffic Police offices where the 26-year-old driver was arrested and taken into custody while the other two persons were questioned in writing and released. The 26-year-old was subjected to a drug test with a positive result.
The arrested man was brought before the Nicosia District Court this morning which ordered his two-day detention.
Nicosia Traffic Police are continuing their investigations.
