The immediate commencement of consultations between the Ministries of Interior of Cyprus and Saudi Arabia, at a technical level, for the conclusion of agreements on a number of issues within their respective areas of competence, Minister of Interior Nikos Nouris and his Saudi counterpart, Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Naif bin Abdulaziz, have agreed on a number of issues of mutual interest, following the recent visit of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, to Riyadh.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior, during the meeting, the friendly relations between the two countries and the intention to strengthen bilateral cooperation on issues within the competence of the two ministries were stressed.
Mr. Nouris expressed the support of the Republic of Cyprus in strengthening the European Union's cooperation with Saudi Arabia, which today becomes more imperative due to the consequences of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The Interior Minister reiterated the support of the Republic of Cyprus for Saudi Arabia's bid to host EXPO2030.
Among other issues discussed were civil protection and evacuation plans for citizens in cases of emergency crises and natural disasters, as well as security and migration issues. The two ministers expressed their intention to sign a memorandum of cooperation, while Interior Minister Nouris extended an invitation to Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Naif to visit our country, which he accepted.
The visit to Saudi Arabia was preceded by a meeting in Beirut with Lebanese Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi. During the meeting, Mr. Nouris expressed his thanks to the neighbouring country for the excellent cooperation in dealing with the maritime migration flows, which is included in the bilateral agreement between Cyprus and Lebanon.
The Lebanese Interior Minister expressed the will of the Lebanese government to continue and strengthen cooperation both in the field of migration and in other areas of common interest. He thanked Mr. Nouri for the humanitarian assistance provided by Cyprus to Lebanon to address the difficulties the country has been facing over the past year, especially after the explosion in the port of Beirut.
The Interior Minister returns to Cyprus this afternoon.
