There is intense concern within Britain's royal family as Queen Elizabeth told Palace workers she "can't move" much in her first in-person performance of her duties since her son, Prince Charles, tested positive for Covid-19.

Last week the 73-year-old heir to the throne pulled out of an event after contracting coronavirus for the second time. A Palace source said the 95-year-old monarch has shown no symptoms but is under observation.

On Tuesday, the queen "welcomed" the new ambassadors of Estonia and Spain via video conference. Today it was announced that she received the outgoing and incoming Defence Secretary at Windsor Castle.

"Oh, here I am," she said self-deprecatingly, leaning on a walking stick as the two secretaries entered the room, according to video of the meeting. When asked how she was feeling, she replied, "As you can see, I can't move," and pointed to her feet before taking a sliding step and greeting them with a handshake.

Buckingham Palace had no comment. A Palace source said the queen is feeling somewhat sore but is not injured or unwell.

The health of Elizabeth, the world's oldest sitting monarch, has been in the spotlight after she was forced to spend an evening in hospital last October and doctors advised her to rest. Last week, however, a source said the queen, who turned 70 years on the throne this month, would return to her duties as normal.
