People were killed and injured when a semi-truck collided with a train in southern Hungary early this morning, causing some of its carriages to derail, police said.

The accident occurred at a crossing in the Minczen district, which is 140 kilometres southeast of Budapest, near Hungary's border with Serbia, shortly before 08:00 local time, police added.

"The rescue operation is ongoing, so we cannot determine the number of victims," a police spokesman told Reuters.

The Hungarian news website delmagyar.hu reported that seven people were killed in the accident, publishing a photo showing a train carriage overturned, a helicopter airlifting patients and ambulances at the scene.

The state-owned railway company said a train heading from Kishkunfeleghiza to Khodmejovasharkheli collided with a truck, derailing one of its wagons with 22 passengers, two of whom have been seriously injured and eight slightly injured.

According to the same statement, the truck violated the red signal.
