Istanbul airport closed due to heavy snowfall

Until 4:00 am the operation of Istanbul airport is suspended due to heavy snowfall, Turkish Airlines announced. The city was paralyzed by the blizzard and citizens were asked not to travel unless there is an emergency.

Before the suspension of flights at Istanbul airport was announced, a Turkish Airlines aircraft circled in the air to land at the airport until it was almost out of fuel and was instructed to land at another airport.

Turkish Airlines

subsequently announced that even the roof of the facility serving the company's warehouses collapsed

due to the volume of snow and the storm, fortunately with no injuries.

Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya announced on his Twitter account that the snowfall in Istanbul would intensify in the evening. He also announced the cancellation of intercity bus services.

Roads were closed due to the heavy snowfall that suddenly started in the center of Istanbul. Several chain accidents occurred on the slippery road. It is reported that fire trucks could not intervene in accidents because they could not proceed.

The Disaster and Emergency Response Center (AFAD) of the Ministry of Interior asked citizens to follow weather warnings due to the adverse weather conditions across the country and not to leave unless necessary.
