Meeting of Pafos District farmers with representatives of agricultural organisations -Letter from livestock farmers to Kadi asking for clarification of milk quota for Friday Haloumiou

Livestock farmers of Paphos District held a meeting with representatives of farmers' organisations last night, discussing the issue of milk quotas in the production of Haloumi.

Evagoras Chrysanthou, on behalf of the farmers, said that they will send a letter[/B] to the Minister of Agriculture, Kostas Kadis, asking for clarification especially on the issue of the sheep and goat milk quota in the preparation of haloumi.

The further steps of the sheep and goat farmers will depend on the answers given at the meeting that is expected to take place, said Chrysanthou, who hoped for a conclusion as soon as possible.

At the same time, he noted that the industry would only survive if a conventional solution to the problem is given.

It is recalled that the above concerns arose after the proposal by the Minister of Agriculture to make changes to the framework for the inclusion of haloumi in the European Union's list of products with protected designation of origin (PDO) last March.

This proposal comes just three months after the implementation of the regulation.

Specifically, Kadi's proposal states that the haloumi quota of 50%+ use of sheep and goat's milk will be reduced to 20% in order to include further halo products that were not included in the haloumi dossier.
