Police investigate cases of illegal import and transport of firecrackers

The police proceeded with the seizure of more than 850 firecrackers, believed to have been imported from the occupied to the free areas of the Republic, a 27-year-old man, against whom the case of importing, possessing and transporting explosives is being investigated.

Specifically, around 12.30 yesterday at noon, a member of the police proceeded to check a driver of a certain vehicle, which was driving in the area of Larnaca district, however, the driver developed speed in order to escape the check. The vehicle was found abandoned at a point in the area and the registered owner, a 27 year old male, was taken to the local Police Station.

Interrogating the suspect, he reported that he had gone to the occupied areas, where he purchased 22 boxes of firecrackers, and then he pointed out to members of the Police to a spot in a field in the area where he had abandoned the firecrackers. A total of 860 firecrackers were found at the spot, which were confiscated by members of the police as evidence.

The 27-year-old was charged in writing for offences relating to the importation, possession and transport of firecrackers, as well as for traffic offences committed with his vehicle.

Second case involving a 65-year-old man and factory firecrackers

In another case, last Friday afternoon, members of the police stopped a car driven by a 65-year-old man for inspection, in the same area of Larnaca district and found inside the vehicle, 300 cylindrical fuse-like objects, believed to be factory-made firecrackers, but not bearing any inscription or brand name.

They are expected to be examined by a police pyrotechnician to determine whether they are firecrackers in working condition.



The two cases are being investigated by the Oroklini Police Station.
