The Coast Guard, in consultation with the Ministry of Shipping will remain vigilant with continuous patrols around the island for the next 24 hours

The young male whale that washed up in the shallows of Alimos beach on Friday morning and was seen yesterday morning on the rocky shore of Selinia beach in Salamina, dived in great depth towards the Saronic Gulf.

Specialized veterinarians of the Marine Mammal Rescue Network administered antibiotics, painkillers and cortisone to the whale and remain ready to intervene in case it is spotted again in shallow waters.

The Coast Guard, in consultation with the Ministry of Shipping, will remain vigilant with continuous patrols around the island for the next 24 hours.

It is recalled that on Saturday afternoon the whale came out on its own in the open sea, according to an announcement by the ARION rescue team on the internet.

Earlier, the small whale had been spotted, on Saturday morning, on a rocky shore of Selinia beach in Salamina.

What the tests showed

Speaking to SKY, the professor of veterinary medicine of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Natasha Komninos, said the species prefers deep waters up to 3.000 meters.

She noted that the whale will be monitored by the rescue teams of veterinarians, the coast guard and rescuers if the animal reappears somewhere.

She clarified that this is the reason why it is not easy to transport and treat it out of the sea. She noted that a small response can be seen but it is a difficult situation. "We will do our best to give it some time and from then on we will monitor it systematically," she said.

"At the moment it has been established that the animal is suffering from severe leukopenia, severe dehydration, anaemia and a severe trauma to the lower jaw which may have hampered the animal and led it into the shallows. He has been treated with fluid electrolytes and drugs and has been supported so far" said the professor.
