Improved Security Council resolution on UNFICYP, says Government Spokesman

Improvements to the UN Security Council resolution on the renewal of the mandate of the peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), in relation to the UN Secretary General's report, the Government is pleased to express its satisfaction.

"We are satisfied with the text of the resolution as it substantially improves the report of the Secretary General of the international organisation, Antonio Guterres," Government Spokesman Marios Pelekanos told the Cyprus News Agency, noting three elements, which the Government considers quite important.

"The first is that the resolution reaffirms the basis for a solution to the Cyprus problem. In fact, specific reference is made to the Security Council resolutions and more specifically to Resolution 1251, which is a resolution in which all the parameters concerning the solution of the Cyprus problem are included."

The second important point, according to the Government Spokesman, is that it highlights the need for the appointment of an envoy "who could help the two parties find the common ground needed to restart the talks process."

He also noted, as a third element, the fact that there is a strong reference to the need to respect resolutions 550 and 789 concerning the enclave of Famagusta "which is consistent with the strong presidential statement of the Security Council that we achieved last summer".

Asked about this, Pelecanos said that finally Nicosia expects that the SG will proceed with the appointment of an envoy, noting that consultations are ongoing.
