"The government's inaction has cost 15 million euros to owners of occupied properties" says AKEL Land Registry Letter

The government's inaction has cost 15 million euros to owners of occupied properties, says AKEL MP and Chairman of the Refugee Committee Nikos Kettiros.

As he notes, in February 2021, the Parliament unanimously passed a law proposal through which a 0.4% fee was imposed on property sales, with the aim of providing support to owners of occupied properties through the FICB.

"Since the day the legislation was passed, the Ministry of Interior has constantly put obstacles in the way of implementing this legislation, and in order for the relevant departments to coordinate with each other to see how to implement it, it took the intervention of the House Committee on Refugees. The issue is that the Government, instead of engaging constructively in the discussion stage of the specific proposal, constantly raised issues of unconstitutionality, talking about the President of the Republic's referral of the legislation."

He adds that "because we were in an election period, the DISY Government did not dare to refer the law, but found other ways to delay its implementation. The tragic result is that, according to official information from the Land Registry, 15 million euros have been lost which could have already supported the owners of occupied properties towards equal burden sharing."

"This is the continuation that DISY wants for the Government of the country. To serve the banks and big business with speed but when it comes to refugees to put obstacles, reservations and delays," he concludes.
