The epidemiological picture in Cyprus is very good and now allows for the relaxation of restrictive measures, said epidemiologist Michalis Voniatis.

Speaking on Rick's "Brand News" programme, Voniatis said that epidemiological indicators show a decrease in cases and especially a decrease in hospitalisations. With these data and considering the high wall of immunity achieved by vaccinations, decisions can be taken to relax some restrictive measures, he said.

Mr. Voniatis said that next Tuesday, the Scientific Advisory Committee will recommend to the Minister of Health relaxations concerning gatherings in homes, increasing the maximum number of people in wedding and baptismal ceremonies and allowing people under 18 years of age to enter cafes with a negative 24-hour rapid test. They will also recommend allowing dancing in nightclubs, and there will be discussion of relaxation for unvaccinated adults.

Mr. Voniatis noted that it is possible that the Omicron variant will mark the end of the pandemic, but stressed that it is necessary to continue the vaccination program to further increase the wall of immunity.
