AKEL MP Christos Christofides reiterates the implications of the 24-year-old rape case in Thessaloniki and the implications that "touch" Cyprus.

As Mr Christofides said, "We consider the issue that has arisen with the allegations of the rape of a 24-year-old girl in Thessaloniki, the existence of a ring and the involvement of Cypriots and Cypriots in this ring as very serious".

He notes that these allegations come at a time when crimes against women, whether they be femicide, rape or other forms of violence against women, are on the rise. "There have been some specific complaints in Greece about the involvement of Cypriots, but also Cyprus as a geographical area, in these parties, which apparently ended in criminal acts."

Christofides thanked the Attorney General for his prompt response. "He has indeed contacted me immediately and together with the Attorney General we have discussed how to proceed with this case."

At the same time he stresses that he has contacted a few times with Mr. Elias Gioni, who has made the allegations and who is the man who highlighted the case of the 24-year-old woman in Thessaloniki, he is also the man who has revealed other criminal acts against women. "Conveying to Mr. Gioni and the Attorney General's recommendation that he submit in writing what he knows to the Chief of Police to further facilitate the investigations. We have agreed that in the next 24 hours this will be done. Mr. Gionis will submit in writing what he knows about the involvement of Cypriots and Cyprus as a geographical area[/B] in this ring. I want to welcome this fact, of course."

The AKEL MP notes that our role is to highlight such issues, we certainly cannot restore justice and the investigative authorities of the State. "I want to underline once again our particular sensitivity, both personal and that of AKEL, in relation to crimes against women, the crime of rape in particular, but also the crime of trafficking in persons, which seems to be linked to this particular case."

In conclusion, he stresses that the Cypriot authorities have a responsibility, and I believe the will, to fully investigate this very serious case, which offends human dignity, human nature and human principles and values in general.
