Serious traffic offences, but also offences of the criminal code were detected by the Police during the increased, nationwide, traffic controls during the last 24 hours.

As part of the checks, at dawn today, a 27-year-old man was found and arrested who was driving a car, which it was found had been stolen a few hours earlier.

Specifically, at around 1.30am, members of the Paphos Traffic Police stopped the vehicle driven by the 27-year-old on a road in Paphos. It was found that the 27-year-old was driving without a driver's license and was not covered by insurance. Furthermore, the driver was subjected to a drug test with a positive result.

Also in the possession of the 27 year old, after a relevant investigation, various objects and coins, totalling €63.50, were found in his possession, for which he did not give sufficient explanations as to how they were found in his possession.

From further investigations into the ownership of the vehicle driven by the 27-year-old, it appears that it had been stolen between the hours of 9pm yesterday and 1.30am. today, while it was parked outside the owner's house in Paphos.

The 27-year-old was arrested for an offence of his own accord and was taken into custody to facilitate investigations, while the case is being investigated by the Peyia Police Station and Paphos Traffic Police.

At the same time during the traffic controls, the members of the Police spotted two persons, driving with a percentage of alcohol in their body, much higher than the permissible limit.



Around 9.30pm, members of the Xylofagos Police Station were called to the scene of a road traffic collision in a village in Famagusta district. It was found that only property damage had been caused by the collision. However, the 37-year-old driver of the vehicle involved in the collision was found positive in a preliminary alcohol test.

A final alcohol test was subsequently carried out on the 37-year-old, with a lower reading of 89μg%, instead of 22μg%.

The 37-year-old was charged in writing and is expected to appear before the Famagusta District Court tomorrow, December 27, for a hearing of the case. The Xylofagos Police Station is investigating the case.

A 25-year-old resident of Larnaca, who allegedly had an alcohol level in his system 12 times higher than the permitted limit, was also driving under the influence of alcohol. He was found to be driving with an expired student driver's licence and without insurance cover.

The vehicle driven by the 25-year-old was stopped for control by members of the Road Accident Prevention Unit on the Limassol - Nicosia motorway a few minutes after midnight. The driver was given a preliminary alcohol test with a positive reading and as a result he was subjected to a final alcohol test, with a lower reading of 109μg% instead of 9μg%.

As a result the 25 year old was arrested for a self-inflicted offence and taken into custody. The Moni Police Station is investigating the case.

Police roadside checks are continuing intensively throughout the road network in order to prevent serious and fatal road collisions.
