We should not forget that Turkey is a member of the North Atlantic Alliance, but also that as such it has obligations with regard to respect for international law, a senior French government source was asked by CNA to comment on the country's place in the debate on the identification of threats to Europe in the context of the formulation of the EU's Strategic Compass.

The same source, who was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of events marking France's assumption of the EU Council presidency, pointed out the extent to which a country can be considered a threat is subjective, and referred to the draft text of the Strategic Compass, which analyses the geopolitical picture.

Specifically on Turkey, he pointed out that we should not forget that it is part of NATO and thus an ally of France and most EU member states. As a member of the North Atlantic Alliance, however, the country must not violate certain principles and rules of international law.

In response to a question whether the hybrid activities in the occupied territories, which concern the internal situation in the TC community and a number of other issues, should also be taken into account, the same source noted that Turkey does indeed have a hybrid presence.

In response to a separate question on Turkey-Greece relations and the general climate in the Eastern Mediterranean, the government source referred to the France-Greece cooperation which has been "opened up" to other countries.

The purpose and message of these partnerships, he added, is that the maritime space should also be governed by international law and the principle of free passage in international waters as the sea is not the property of a state.
