The ultrasonic increase in COVID-19 cases in France is expected to continue in the coming days, and there are no signs of a reversal of the trend, Government Spokesman Gabriel Atal said today.
The number of cases is reaching stratospheric levels in the Ile-de-France region around Paris and in some other areas of France and the situation in hospitals is likely to deteriorate in the coming weeks, the French government spokesman warned.
Meanwhile, the French government declared a state of health emergency in several overseas territories, including Guadeloupe and Guyana, Mayotte, St. Maarten and St. Bartelemy, due to a significant increase in cases of Covid-19 caused by the Omicron variant of the virus.
Reunion and Martinique have been under a state of health emergency since 27 December, which allows regional governors to impose curfew measures. The onslaught of Omicron, coupled with low vaccination coverage in the French archipelago, have spiked the number of cases of the disease, posing a threat of severe forms of the disease and overwhelming pressure on health structures.
