The former President of the Hellenic Republic Christos Sarzetakis passed away.

Christos Sarzetakis who was born in 1929 passed away today at the age of 93 after a long hospitalization in intensive care.

Christos Sarzetakis has made his own history both as a lawyer and as a political figure having served as President of the Hellenic Republic.

Christos Sarzetakis was born in 1929 in Thessaloniki. A graduate of the Law School of the University of Thessaloniki, after practicing law for a few months, he entered the Judiciary in 1955. From 1965 to 1967, on educational leave, he undertook postgraduate studies in Paris in commercial law and European Community law. He is married to Efi Argyriou and they have one daughter.

Judicial and political career

In 1963, while serving at the Court of First Instance of Thessaloniki, he became internationally known as an investigator in the case of the political assassination of the left-wing MP Gregory Lambrakis, which he successfully conducted.

In 1968, under the dictatorial regime, he was dismissed from the judiciary and subsequently arrested twice, tortured and imprisoned, without trial, for about a year. With the collapse of the dictatorship he was restored to service in September 1974 with the rank of Appellant. In 1981 he was promoted to the rank of President of the Court of Appeal and in 1982 to the rank of Areopagitou.



During the 1985 presidential election Christos Sarzetakis was nominated by the PASOK party and elected by it and the parties of the left on 29 March 1985 as President of the Republic, remaining in that position until 5 May 1990.

Important Moments

Christos Sarzetakis was an Honorary Member of the Supreme Court of Portugal, Honorary Doctorate of the Department of History and Ethnology of the Democritus University of Thrace, Honorary Member of the Society of Writers of Thessaloniki and member of scientific societies in Greece and abroad. He has received various honorary distinctions and the highest medals of foreign countries and is an honorary citizen of many municipalities and communities of our country. He has published various legal and political studies.
