The UN Secretary General's Special Representative for Cyprus, Colin Stewart, met this morning with Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides.

According to the Cypriot News Agency, the aim of the meeting was to discuss the situation in the Cyprus problem and the efforts to improve the climate between the two sides, with the aim of breaking the current deadlock and restarting the process for the resolution of the problem, based on what was reported the United Nations Security Council Resolution on the renewal of the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) until 31 July 2022.

Stewart will also have a meeting today, reportedly in the occupied territories, with the "foreign minister", Tahsin Ertugruroglu. As reported to CBC, the UN official is continuing his contacts with various actors on the island, discussing with them on the basis of the UN Security Council resolution on UNFICYP.

Meanwhile, a well-informed source told CNA that the intention of the Turkish Cypriot side to give the Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) the concept of an "intergovernmental cooperation" stumbles the implementation of such measures.

He added that in the bi-communal Technical Committees "small issues differences are discussed and some may be agreed upon. We are talking about small steps," he said.

"Unfortunately, the other side is trying to present everything as so-called intergovernmental cooperation, which is why most of it stumbles on issues of terminology," the same source said.

He added that important MOUs proposed by the President of the Republic, such as the one on the Famagusta issue, also run into the other side's attempt to frame their discussion in the context of "intergovernmental cooperation" to promote the idea of "two states".

The same source also referred to an action plan for the participation of women in the peace process that was not officially announced, but the Security Council was informed of it, hence the reference to it in its resolution.
