The Foreign Minister will raise the issue of CBMs and ask for EU support during his contacts in Brussels The agenda of Kasoulides' presence at the Foreign Affairs Council
The Foreign Minister will ask for EU support in promoting Nicosia's proposal on Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) between the two communities in Cyprus, Ioannis Kasoulides, during bilateral contacts in Brussels, where he will participate in the EU Foreign Affairs Council on Monday.
Kasoulides will raise the issue of the MoU during his bilateral meetings with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borel, and with the Foreign Ministers of Italy and Germany, Luigi di Maio and Analena Berboc.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Demetris Demetriou told the Cyprus News Agency that on Monday morning Kasoulides will have a meeting with Borel, the first since taking office as Foreign Minister last month.
He said that the discussion between Mr. Kasoulides and Mr. Borrell is expected to focus on issues related to the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy, issues that are in the focus of the Foreign Affairs Council, as well as issues related to the Cyprus problem.
In this context, Mr. Kasoulides is expected to brief the High Representative on Nicosia's proposal for the MoU and ask for the EU's support in this effort, which aims to regain the lost trust and to create mobility, with the aim of creating a good climate, an element necessary for the resumption of a new process for the settlement of the Cyprus problem, he added.
It is recalled that the President of the Republic, Nicos Anastasiades, has announced the presentation of a comprehensive proposal to the European Council on the need for Europe to take initiatives both for the solution of the Cyprus problem and for the adoption of substantial MEAs that will restore confidence and pave the way for a new creative dialogue.
The Foreign Minister had discussed, among other things, the issue of the MEAs in his contacts during his recent visit to the United States, while the President of the Republic also discusses the issue during his contacts with heads of state and other officials.
