Foreign Minister and Speaker of the House of Commons discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation
The strengthening of the bilateral partnership between Cyprus and Britain was among the issues discussed at a meeting on Thursday between Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and Speaker of the House of Commons Sir Lindsay Hoyle.
According to a post by the Foreign Ministry on Twitter, during the meeting, which took place in the context of the British official's three-day visit to Cyprus, issues of common interest were discussed, such as the strengthening of the bilateral partnership, cooperation within the framework of the Commonwealth and the promotion of ties between the peoples of the two countries.
No statements were made after the meeting.
On Tuesday 15 February the Speaker of the House of Commons held meetings with the President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades and the Speaker of the House of Representatives Anita Demetriou, while his schedule on Wednesday 16 February included a meeting with the British contingent of UNFICYP, as well as a visit to the area of the British Bases of Episkopi and Akrotiri.
As he had said in an interview with CNA, the first official visit of the Speaker of the House of Commons to Cyprus is an opportunity to reaffirm the strong Cyprus-UK friendship and mutual commitment to democratic values, while in his speech to the House of Representatives plenary on Tuesday 15 February, Sir Lindsey Hoyle expressed the UK's "unwavering support" for the reunification of the island in a bizonal bicommunal federation.
