Five UNFICYP members from Ukraine to be repatriated, will be replaced as soon as possible, Siddique tells CBC
Five members of the United Nations peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) from Ukraine are leaving and will be repatriated.
UN Secretary-General's spokesman, Stefan Duzarik, said at the regular international media briefing that Ukraine has requested the withdrawal of personnel serving in peacekeeping operations in Mali, Cyprus, Abyei, South Sudan and Kosovo, involving 250 troops, 36 officers and experts on mission, and 22 police officers, a total of 308 people.
The personnel from Ukraine in UNFICYP amounts to five persons. Asked about this, the spokesman for the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus, Alim Siddiq, told CBC that arrangements are being made for the repatriation of these people, that is, their return to Ukraine, noting that one of them belongs[/B] to the military personnel[/B] and the other four belong to the UNFICYP police force.
He also said that arrangements are being made from the United Nations offices in New York, where the headquarters of the international organization is located, for their replacement, in coordination with the countries contributing troops to UN peacekeeping operations, and that this will be done as soon as possible.
Finally, Mr Siddique said that UNFICYP continues its operations unhindered.
