Five UN employees were kidnapped in southern Yemen while returning to Aden after a mission, the United Nations announced yesterday, Saturday.
The officials were kidnapped on Friday in Abyan Governorate, said Russell Giki, spokesman for the top UN official in Yemen. The United Nations is in contact with the authorities to secure their release, Giki added.
A military coalition led by Saudi Arabia has been fighting the pro-Iranian Houthi rebels in Yemen since 2015. The coalition intervened in Yemen's civil war in 2015 after the Houthis overthrew the government in Sanaa. The conflict has caused the death of tens of thousands of people and the displacement of millions, resulting in a dire humanitarian crisis.
