The Islamic State has not yet claimed responsibility for the attack
Fifteen Syrian army soldiers were killed today in an attack by the Islamic State on a military bus in the desert of central Syria, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
"Islamic State cells attacked the military bus in the Palmyra desert, killing 15 soldiers and wounding 18 others," the Observatory said. This figure is likely to rise as many of the wounded are in critical condition."
IS has not currently claimed responsibility for the attack.
The Observatory also reported that three Syrian soldiers were killed on Saturday east of Palmyra when the car carrying them came under fire.
At least 61 pro-government soldiers have been killed in IS attacks in the Syrian desert since the beginning of the year. The "caliphate" established by jihadists in Syrian and Iraqi territories was defeated in March 2019 but some of its cells remain and continue to launch attacks on regime and Kurdish forces.
