Famed Italian fashion designer Nino Cerruti has died at the age of 91, a fashion industry source told Agence France-Presse earlier on Saturday, confirming Italian media reports.

Cerruti died in a hospital in the town of Vercelli, in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy, where he was undergoing hip surgery, according to the online edition of the Corriere della Sera newspaper. "A giant among Italian businessmen is gone," reacted Deputy Minister of Economic Development Gilberto Piccetto."

Cerruti introduced "casual chic" to men's luxury fashion. In the 1970s he was considered a master of casual chic, but he felt that the term "chic" had "a terrible taste of the old", preferring the concept of "style". "To have style is to combine culture and art," according to Cerruti."

Born on 25 September 1930 in Biela, Cerruti was forced to abandon his studies in philosophy at the age of 20, after the death of his father Silvio, to take over the family textile factory, thus abandoning his dream of becoming a journalist.

In the 1960s, he met the then unknown Giorgio Armani, four years his junior, and hired him as a designer for men's fashion. The duo, who greatly influenced the fashion world, parted ways a decade later, after Armagni decided to set up his own fashion house in 1975.

Among his many activities, Nino Cerruti, awarded the Knight of Labor award, was also the official designer of the Ferrari Formula 1 team.
